Growing up, I didn’t think there was a huge difference between Malaysian Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese Mandarin Chinese because my Malaysian Chinese father and Taiwanese mother pretty much sounded the same when they talked to each other. Then they enrolled me in a Chinese elementary school, where my classmates wasted no time in telling me that it was unnatural to speak Mandarin without Cantonese inflections.
I found out later that dad’s accent and speech was much transformed by his years studying in Taiwan, though mom continues to insist that he’s never been able to pronounce “人“ correctly.
